Expert Supplier Advice

It is no secret that Save The Date Magazine take the matter of cake very seriously

After all, who doesn’t love a slice of wedding cake! As one of the must-have items on almost all wedding lists, you might find your confidence crumbling (see what we did there?) on sweet-based decisions; buttercream vs fondant, how many tiers is too many tiers and even how to present the thing on the day. With this in mind, we have drafted in the experts from Red Robin Cakery to spill the tea…

Current Trends

THE current trend for cakey goodness is is definitely the dessert / graze table; we are seeing more and more couples opting for a small cake for the ‘cutting’ but surrounding it with loads of beautifully presented sweet treats - not only a feast for your guests, but a feast for the eyes too! Textured buttercream cakes are also one of my favourite new trends; a happy medium between a traditional white fully iced cake and a modern, alternative look. Adding texture to your cake makes it stand out and adds depth, plus you can incorporate your wedding colours with spots and smears here and there for showstopper style.

Styling Tips

Cake table styling is often forgotten about or only thought of very last minute, and that’s such a shame because there is so much that can be done to really make the cake stand out. If you have a venue stylist, chat to them about what they could provide to jazz up the cake table with in keeping accessories; think about how you can showcase that edible centre piece. If you’ve opted for a dessert table, chat to your cake maker about stands and plates etc that they could provide to take it to the next level; it’s all about layering - different levels, different styles and different elements to add interest to the display. Adding a cake flavours sign to the table or something similar can really help to catch your guests' attention too and have them dreaming about tucking into the sticky toffee cake later on!

How to Save Money

My first tip would be to let your cake maker know your budget before you start looking at what you want and, that way, they can guide you through what sort of design might work for your budget, before you set your heart on one design. Sugar paste/fondant cakes are more expensive so opting for a buttercream or semi-naked cake will cut your costs right down. The other thing to steer away from if you’re trying to save money are sugar flowers as they are massively time consuming to make and therefore are pretty expensive. Have your florist provide a few cake safe florals instead to save money (and everything will tie together perfectly too - bonus!)

Know What You Want

If you are really struggling to find a cake design that you like, then don’t worry; the cake world can be unexpectedly overwhelming when you first start to take a look. If this sounds like you, the most important thing is to choose a cake maker that you trust and they can guide you through the process and create something perfect for your wedding. Have a scroll through Pinterest or Instagram and save a few designs that you like and show these to your cake maker so that they will get.
