It’s quite often said to me, ‘this is my first time planning a wedding, I have no idea where to start with my wedding stationery!’ And so it should be, not many of us have planned a wedding more than once, and typically if you have, it was a while ago and the wedding industry changes so quickly it’s unlikely that things are the same. So here’s my tips and tricks to give your wedding stationery planning a boost.

It’s per household, not person

It is one of the only items of your big day that isn’t based on how many guests you’re having! You can save some money by knowing you only need to order one invitation per household. I have so many couples who forget this, which is understandable; when most other things are per person, it’s easy to forget when ordering your wedding and evening invitations. You could save yourself almost half the amount, or afford more luxury invitations.

It’s the finer details

Going the extra mile with the finer details can really add a touch of luxury to your stationery; envelope liners help add detail to your envelopes and make them feel more luxurious and adding a wax seal to them will finish them off perfectly. These little touches can really add to the first impression your guests will have of your special day. Of course, the cost can add up, but you could add these details yourself, and if you’re not at all crafty, you can buy self-adhesive wax seals online!

On the day stationery

Sometimes the day time stationery gets forgotten about; they get missed out the budget & can end up being function over aesthetics. But your day time stationery doesn’t have to be boring at all! Just think about the extras you could include to add the finishing touches to your wedding day. For example adding a timeline, information page or fun facts page to your order of service will keep your guests entertained while they wait for your big entrance. Table plans can be beautiful as well as functional and matching back to your invitations, menus, order of service etc can really pull your big day together.

Timing is key

I always suggest sending your invitations 3-6 months before your wedding, but remember to check with your venue on when they need your final numbers back. And always ensure you allow enough notice for guests to reply to you, giving a couple of weeks leeway. The last thing you want is to be frantically chasing guests for their replies on the day you have to have your numbers in.

Think about your content

Invitations are not just the information about the ceremony, they’re so much more! You have the chance to add in all the information your guests might need to know, such as venue address, local taxi numbers, places to stay or, if you would like, a dress code. Last thing you need is Auntie Betty calling you while you’re getting ready asking how to get to the ceremony! Make it as clear as possible, and include what you can.

Have some fun!

It’s right, your invitations are the first glimpse of your wedding day your guests will see, so why not keep them in suspense with your overall ‘theme’ or just add a little fun to their day when they receive them. Adding in quirky wording, layout or a jokey design can really brighten the recipient’s day.

No need for please…

Do not add please before RSVP – RSVP is répondez s'il vous plait, which means “please respond” in French, so no need for the please!
