Welcome to the wedding of Rebecca and Matthew at The West Mill

Classic glamour meets industrial charm

When we spotted this wedding on A Big Neon Glitter Photography's instagram feed we fell head over heels! Taking place in one of the region's hottest venues, The West Mill, this lockdown micro wedding has some serious style - the floral touches and styling details give a pretty twist to the industrial background.

It is just such a joy to see these gorgeous days that managed to go ahead during 2020, especially when they look like this!

We walked into the West Mill venue and instantly fell in love

it was the one and only venue we looked at and knew we wouldn’t find anywhere better suited to us! We wanted everything to be subtle with everything leading back to the incredible venue and letting it really sing. After booking originally for the 9th October we were well on our way to everything being booked and organised, and despite having to rethink the guest list to be in line with the 30 guest rules everything was going to plan, but we still had a fair amount to do. However, when the government announced that further restriction would be coming into place, which meant we would have to cut our guest list to just 15 we were absolutely devastated, as so many couples this year have been. This was announced on Tuesday 22nd of September, and after feeling very sorry for ourselves for about 20 minutes, I called the venue and asked for any space before the rules came into place the following Monday and they told me as long as I could get the registrar to agree, we could move it to that Saturday. So, in 3 days we managed to move everything forward. All out suppliers were amazing and we got everything we wanted from our big day, and honestly it was so special that all our friends and family rallied together to make it happen for us and made it even more special.

“The whole day was relaxed, and filled with love and laughter.”

After so many people having such an incredibly difficult year, having our nearest and dearest be able to see us get married, and in the most beautiful setting was more than we could have asked for.

Eye Candy

Venue

The West Mill is an old Mill at Darley Abbey in Derby. It has been restored so sympathetically and beautifully. It has some of the building original features maintained, such as the mill floor in the ceremony room, and the distressed ceiling, these feel industrial and hard, but this is countered by floods of beautiful light that cascades through the huge windows on this floor. The whole venue is set up brilliantly so you start you wedding on the top floor and move down the Mill floors throughout the day.

There is the most stunning view of the Weir outside the venue. All of the furniture inside, although fitting in perfectly with the feeling of the Mill feels luxurious and would complement any wedding theme or colour palette. The staff were amazing and really went above and beyond to make our big day happen, even at such short notice.

Vibe

We really wanted to keep things nice and simple, and essentially allow our guests to enjoy how gorgeous the venue is, like we did when we first visited. This is what we managed to achieve, by keeping the colour palette a mix of neutrals and greys. With copper touches to compliment the venue, and lot’s of greenery, dried grasses to add texture and interest on the table settings and in the ceremony room.

The Outfits

I wore an off the shoulder sweetheart neck line fitted gown, this was covered in lace and had a sheer illusion back. The groom, our Dad’s and his best man all wore matching charcoal suits, a white shirt and grey paisley style tie. My bridesmaid wore mink colour floor length gown, that were embellished with dark grey, and cream beading details. My flower girl wore a grey tutu and cream leotard, with a beautiful fresh flower crown.

On The Menu

We had a range of Gin’s for our guests for the reception drinks, with beers and soft drinks available. For our meal we wanted something that would be a crowd pleaser, so we decided pie and mash would go down well (which it did!) and at night time, because all of our guests had been to the day time, we went for a selection of canapes for a ‘midnight’ snack.
