A Micro Wedding with Serious Style

The COVID pandemic has had devastating effects on the wedding industry and we were one of the 2020 couples that faced such uncertainty and were stuck in limbo for 5 months surrounding our wedding. We were set to have 120 of our family and friends attend our wedding in August, but in June this was postponed to next year… it will still be taking place, but now just slightly different than we originally planned, so rather than celebrating getting married, we will be celebrating our first year of marriage. We had booked cottages in Northumberland for the week of the original wedding and, as a family, decided we still wanted to go as the break would do us the world of good… wedding or no wedding. Then on the 4th July Boris announced that small wedding ceremonies were able to take place and with no plan, dress, or even rings, we booked the first slot available and gave a new notice of marriage at Bakewell Town Hall. However, at this point, we were still uncertain that we would finally get the chance to marry as registry offices across England had different rules and Morpeth Town Hall weren’t able to give the green light just yet. The waiting game began and then, just 28 days before our date, we got the go ahead and the planning started.

I wanted to keep my dress a surprise until next year so opted for a shorts suit from Reiss and my flowers were by Wildfire Floral Co who are the queens of florals and have the most beautiful style; edgy and quirky yet still remaining feminine and pretty. For the arrangement they used toffee roses, VIP garden roses, scabious, dahlia, a selection of dried flowers and a hint of pampas. Our photographer, Jo Greenfield, I cannot recommend enough – her photos and video were so beautifully crafted and she captured the day perfectly. The day would not have been half as memorable if it weren’t for Charlotte Pennefather’s words! Charlotte, our celebrant on the day, wrote and delivered the most meaningful and personal ceremony that brought with it all the emotions; laughter, love and happy tears, all in equal measures. It was a new experience for us and our family members on the day, having never seen a wedding conducted by a celebrant, and it really opened everyone’s eyes to how ceremonies can be done.

Micro-weddings are for the win! You don’t need to have a huge budget or huge celebrations to have the most amazing wedding day. The reason for, and most important part of, the day is so you can become husband and wife. Sometimes you can get lost and so carried away in the planning of a wedding, of how things “should” be and of pleasing others, that you sometimes forget why you are having your day in the first place. You get wrapped up in things that you won’t even notice on the day and it’s only after that you realise it’s actually the small moments, that you hadn’t even planned, that you truly remember. Plus, who says you can’t have two weddings and drag out the celebrations… roll on to being with all our family and friends next year, for part 2!
